Opening of the exhibition “Marking Time” at MoMA PS1 (runs until September 7, 2020)
22–25 Jackson Avenue, Long Island City, Queens, NY 11101
Exhibition Description: “Marking Time” explores the aesthetic visions and art of people in U.S. prisons alongside a number of works by nonincarcerated artists concerned with state repression, erasure, and imprisonment. The exhibit is organized around the artists’ experimentation with time, space, and matter as structured by the carceral state. From various sites of un/freedom, artists devise strategies to visualize, map, and materialize the impact and scale—the vast reaches—of modern life under carceral regimes. Challenging the inside/outside divide that shapes common understanding of prisons and contemporary art, “Marking Time” considers aesthetic and material links between artists differently situated, some working from solitary confinement, prison work release programs, and others from established art institutions, in collaboration with directly impacted people, and in the public sphere.
